Bed Bugs Fast Facts

 

    • Bed bugs are attracted to warmth and carbon dioxide and feed on warm-blooded hosts, usually humans and potentially other warm-blooded animals.
    • Bed bugs live in cracks and crevices, electrical outlets, wall voids, behind wallpaper, baseboards and picture frames, mattresses, box springs and headboards and in bedding materials as well as other upholstered furniture.
    • Bed bugs are nocturnal insects and feed at night and hide during the day.
    • Bed bug adults are big enough to be seen.  They are reddish-brown to brown in their natural state and red after a blood meal.
    • Bed bug adults have six legs, are flat and oval-shaped and are no more than ¼ inch in length.
    • Bed bugs feed for 2-5 minutes and are not felt by humans while biting.
    • Bed bug eggs and immature bed bugs are extremely difficult to see.
    • Bed bugs can live for several months without feeding.
    • Bed bugs move and reproduce rapidly, leading to a rapid spread of an infestation.
    • A single female can lay up to 500 eggs in a month.
